Stately Homes
Pod Walks: bringing alive moments in history
Imagine these
| |
- You enter the Grand Hall, a voice from history guides you round pointing out the important features, the pictures, the gallery, the window design etc. You might also hear some music of the time, the dinner gong, or an ancient wind up gramophone.
- The kitchen is alive with the sounds of activity. A maid scuttles to answer the ladies bell. A butler barks orders to the cook. Food is being chopped, saucepans clang and a kettle boils.
- In the drawing room the lady of the house is quietly working on some needlework. She describes her day, her life in the house, and maybe lets slip a little gossip.
- In the Nursery the children of the house are in the middle of a lesson. The governess is in charge. She outlines the children’s timetable and the kind of things they are learning.
- Down in the cellar, the handyman is stacking bags of flour which have just been delivered from the mill. He will tell you all the different kinds of foodstuffs the household consumes through the year, and the masters wine. He might also warn about the ghost.
